My family and I have been living in Surrey for over 20 years and in Cloverdale for 12 of those years. I am the lucky mother of 4 kids who aren't really kids anymore, the youngest is a teenager now! It goes so fast that you really need to slow down and treasure the time with them, and make those years magical!
I was at an Early Learning workshop and the presenter asked us all to close our eyes and remember the happiest memory of our childhood. Then she asked us," how many of those memories took place outside?" Can you guess that everyone had their hands up? I believe, more than ever, that children need to be outside, out in nature, taking chances and getting messy. That's where the magic happens! I don't have a forest in my back yard but I definitely want to create an inspiring place for children to play and learn.
Two of my children attended a parent participation preschool where parents act as teacher assistant on their duty days. It was an amazing place, full of messy art, free play, community spirit and outdoor time. I knew that I had found my passion and enrolled in an Early Childhood Education course.
I opened Forest Friends in 2012 and later moved on to work at Child Care Options in Surrey. Through supporting ECEs and families in the community, I learned about the child care challenges and needs in the area. I supported clients starting out in child care and taught Good Beginnings, a course for family child care. I hosted and presented workshops and was a child car seat technician for our car seat clinics.
In spring 2017, I applied for the Capital Funding Grant to open a center in my home. I really missed the daily interaction with children and I never really closed the door to having my own center again, so this seemed like an excellent opportunity.
I am proud to say that I was the only in-home center in BC selected for the grant in 2017. I used the money to renovate my center, and redesign the outdoor play area.
It is very important to me to provide excellent quality child care from my home, to show parents that smaller intimate settings in their community can be the best possible choice for their child and their family.
Now let's go play outside!!!!!!
